by Hrishita BhattGraphic Era Hill University has proudly secured 1st place in Ecolympics 2024, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to sustainability, waste management, and climate action. This victory is not just about winning a title but a reflection of the dedication, innovation, and passion that the students brought to the initiative, setting a benchmark for environmental responsibility.
Ecolympics 2024, organized by Waste Warriors under Project YUWA (Youth United for Waste & Climate Actions), encouraged institutions across Dehradun to take action for a sustainable future. Over the span of two months, students across the city contributed to more than 4,500 climate actions, focusing on waste reduction, awareness campaigns, and community engagement. However, what made Graphic Era Hill University stand out was the depth and creativity with which its students approached the challenge, ensuring that their impact extended beyond the competition and into real-world change.
Students participated in a diverse range of eco-conscious initiatives, each tackling a different aspect of sustainability. The Trashion Walk was a remarkable showcase where students turned waste materials into stylish and meaningful outfits, proving that sustainability can be both innovative and expressive.
The Junk Genius and Green Art competitions saw students repurpose discarded items into functional and artistic pieces, redefining the way people perceive waste. The university also took a strong stance on e-waste management, organizing collection drives to ensure proper disposal of electronic waste, thereby reducing its harmful impact on the environment.
Beyond artistic expression and waste collection, the university also focused on meaningful dialogue and research-based initiatives. Chai Pe Charcha provided an interactive platform for students to engage in discussions about sustainability, encouraging knowledge-sharing and brainstorming of innovative solutions.
The Conscious Campus Initiative reinforced long-term commitments to eco-friendly practices, ensuring that Graphic Era continues to lead by example. The Digital Campaign amplified the message of environmental responsibility, spreading awareness through online platforms, while Recycle Rap took a creative spin on advocacy by using music and performance to highlight the importance of recycling.
A key project, Life of Trash, explored the journey of waste from creation to disposal, offering insights into how consumption habits impact the environment and what steps can be taken to mitigate damage. Meanwhile, Operation Clean Sweep saw students actively participate in large-scale clean-up drives, making a visible difference in their surroundings.
The efforts of the students culminated in a grand closing ceremony at the IRDT Auditorium, Survey Chowk, where their achievements were celebrated. The event was a powerful reminder of the potential for young minds to lead change. The Nukkad Natak, performed with energy and conviction, delivered a thought-provoking message on sustainability, while the Trashion Walk turned waste into fashion statements, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
Dignitaries such as Dr. SP Subudhi, IFS, Director of the State Environment Conservation and Climate Change Directorate, Uttarakhand, and SDM Gauri Prabhat commended the students for their leadership and enthusiasm in driving climate action. Mayank Sharma, Director of Waste Warriors, acknowledged the pivotal role of Graphic Era Hill University in making Project YUWA a success, emphasizing how these initiatives are shaping the next generation of environmental leaders.
However, this victory is not just a moment of celebration—it is a responsibility. Winning Ecolympics 2024 is only the beginning of a larger movement towards sustainability. Graphic Era Hill University is committed to continuing its efforts, inspiring more students to engage, innovate, and take action. Environmental responsibility is not a one-time initiative but a way of life, and the university is determined to keep building on this momentum, ensuring that sustainability remains at the core of its mission.
This achievement is proof that when young minds come together with a shared purpose, real change happens. The journey doesn't end here—it is an invitation for more students to step forward, contribute, and be a part of the movement towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.
